Bithumb Exchange Credibility and Security: Is Bithumb Legit?
Bithumb is one of the oldest and best-known cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea, and over its years of operation it has built a significant position in the country's market. Relying on international security standards, partnerships with reputable financial institutions and compliance with regulatory requirements, the exchange has sought to provide a safe and trustworthy environment for traders.
One of Bithumb's most important strengths is its ISMS-P (Information Security and Personal Information Protection Management System) certification, which has been renewed through 2028. In addition, the exchange has obtained the international standards ISO/IEC 27001 for information security management and ISO/IEC 27701 for privacy information management. These certifications show that the security processes and user data management at the company are designed and assessed according to globally recognized standards.
On the other hand, Bithumb's official partnership with KB Kookmin Bank, one of South Korea's largest banks, for user identity verification and transaction management has strengthened the exchange's credibility in terms of compliance with financial regulations. In 2025, the platform also ranked first in the Korean Customer Satisfaction Index (KCSI) and was named the most downloaded financial app in the country, reflecting the trust a significant share of domestic users place in its services.
Overall, given its track record, adherence to security standards, partnerships with reputable financial institutions and international certifications, Bithumb can be considered one of the reputable exchanges in South Korea's cryptocurrency market.
Has Bithumb exchange ever been hacked or involved in fraud?
Contrary to popular belief, Bithumb has experienced several major security incidents in the past. Between 2017 and 2019, the exchange was targeted by cyberattacks three times, with total losses estimated at more than $100 million.
Bithumb's most significant security incidents include the following:
By breaching the personal computer of one of the exchange's employees, attackers gained access to the data of more than 31,000 user accounts and made many of them victims of phishing attacks.
June 2018 hack: In this attack, hackers breached the exchange's servers and stole more than $30 million in cryptocurrency from its hot wallets. Bithumb announced that it had compensated all user losses from its own assets.
March 2019 hack: About $19 million in digital assets was stolen. Subsequent investigations showed that the incident was likely carried out by insiders or former employees, without breaking through external security layers, by abusing access to private keys.
In addition to cyberattacks, Bithumb also faced a widespread system error in February 2026. Due to a flaw in its rewards system, about 620,000 Bitcoin worth more than $40 billion were mistakenly credited to some users' accounts. The exchange immediately halted withdrawals and announced that it had managed to recover 99.7% of these assets.
Despite this history, Bithumb has made significant investments in security infrastructure in recent years and has sought to raise its level of security by obtaining various certifications, using fraud detection systems (FDS) and working with South Korean financial institutions. Nevertheless, these incidents show that Bithumb, like many of the world's major exchanges, has faced serious security challenges in the past, and users should not rely solely on the exchange's security measures but also use methods such as enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) and keeping the bulk of their assets in a personal wallet.
Cryptocurrencies on Bithumb Exchange
One of Bithumb's strengths is its wide variety of cryptocurrencies and its professional categorization structure. The exchange offers assets in two main markets, the Korean won market (KRW Market) and the Bitcoin market (BTC Market), so users can choose between the fiat market and the crypto market depending on their trading strategy.
To make searching for and analyzing coins easier, Bithumb has placed them in numerous thematic categories. Layer 1 projects, Layer 2, artificial intelligence (AI), DeFi, Web3 and DePIN, real-world assets (RWA), gaming and the metaverse, meme coins and NFTs are just some of these categories. This structure helps traders spot hot market trends faster and review projects related to their area of interest more easily.
In addition, Bithumb provides users with tools for monitoring market conditions. Sections such as Bullish Signal, Major Coins and Investment Alerts offer information on the price trends and risk status of certain assets and can play a supporting role in investors' decision-making.

Managing Costs on Bithumb Exchange
To manage user costs, Bithumb uses a transparent, tiered fee structure. The base trading fee on this exchange is 0.25 percent, but users can reduce their trading costs in the Korean won (KRW) market to as low as 0.04 percent by using discount coupons. In the Bitcoin (BTC) market, some trades can also be made with zero fees through special coupons.
In addition, Bithumb has six membership levels that, based on trading volume, give users benefits such as trading points, a Maker Reward and further discounts; so active traders can gradually lower their costs by increasing their trading volume.
Alongside lower fees, Bithumb also offers tools for asset management and optimizing investment returns. Through the asset status and trade history sections, users can closely track their account's costs and performance.
Services such as staking and «Lending Plus» also make it possible to earn passive income from idle assets, and tools such as «AI Trade Kit» and automated trading bots help with executing trading strategies and managing capital better.
Bithumb Deposit and Withdrawal Conditions
The Bithumb crypto exchange has set a range of security and regulatory requirements for depositing and withdrawing cryptocurrencies and cash. The most important condition for using these services is completing the identity verification (KYC) process and having the user's information verified in line with anti-money laundering (AML) rules. If identity information is incomplete or incorrect, or the user refuses to complete verification, Bithumb can restrict or suspend access to deposit and withdrawal services.
To improve the security of user assets, Bithumb uses a «Withdrawal Lock» mechanism. Under it, after the first cash deposit to the account, withdrawals of all digital assets are not possible for up to 72 hours. For subsequent deposits, the withdrawal restriction on an amount equal to the deposit is reduced to 24 hours.
Users can also save and manage destination wallet addresses in the «Address Book» section so that withdrawals are faster and less prone to error. Cash deposits and withdrawals are made only through verified bank accounts. In addition, in special circumstances such as cyberattacks, banking system outages or security inspections, Bithumb has the right to temporarily suspend deposit and withdrawal services to ensure the security of user assets.
Bithumb Exchange Fees
Bithumb uses a tiered fee structure that allows active users to reduce their trading costs. The standard trading fee on this exchange is 0.25 percent, but users in the Korean won (KRW) market can lower this rate to as little as 0.04 percent with discount coupons. In the Bitcoin (BTC) market, some trades can also be made with zero fees through special coupons and points, which makes Bithumb one of the more competitive exchanges in South Korea in terms of trading costs.
Besides trading discounts, Bithumb has a six-level membership system, from White to Black, determined by users' trading volume. Members at each level receive benefits such as Trading Points and a Maker Reward, and the higher the user's level, the larger these rewards become.
At the top membership level (Black), total benefits can reach 0.02 percent. Crypto withdrawal fees at Bithumb are not fixed and vary depending on the cryptocurrency and the transfer network. The minimum deposit and withdrawal amounts for each asset are also listed in the exchange's fee guide so that users know the related costs and limits before making a transaction.

Review of the Bithumb Exchange App User Experience
In terms of trading features, the Bithumb mobile app gives users a range of tools such as buying and selling cryptocurrencies, asset management, Korean won (KRW) deposits and withdrawals, automated trading and a rewards system; however, real user experience shows that the app faces significant challenges, especially for users outside South Korea. The app's ratings on various stores reflect this as well: the Bithumb app has a rating of 3.1 out of 5 on Google Play, 2.1 out of 5 on the App Store and 1.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot.
One of the main problems for international users is the lack of English in the mobile version. According to Bithumb support, the app currently supports only Korean and there is no option to change the language, which makes registration, identity verification and using various sections of the app difficult for non-Korean users. Some users have also reported that the limited English words in parts of the app, without a full translation, cause even more confusion.
Numerous negative reviews have also been recorded regarding technical performance. Some users have complained about temporary server outages, login issues, problems receiving verification SMS messages and user interface errors. Some reports also mention issues such as the keyboard displaying incorrectly during withdrawals, which can disrupt transactions.
In addition, customer support and the asset withdrawal process account for the most user dissatisfaction. Some traders have reported long delays in withdrawing coins such as XRP and XLM due to technical problems or node updates. Also, on platforms such as Trustpilot, some users have made claims about being asked to pay separate fees to release withdrawals or about poor support performance; however, these are reported user experiences and do not on their own prove definitive wrongdoing by the exchange.
