The complete guide to the economic calendar
An economic calendar is a scheduled list of the news that moves the currency, gold and crypto markets: inflation and employment data, central bank interest rate decisions, speeches by the heads of these banks and dozens of other indicators. The Teagle economic calendar shows all of these events in Tehran time with Persian titles, places crypto and Iran events alongside them, and explains why each release matters. If you are new to the concept of an economic calendar, also read the article What Is an Economic Calendar ; this guide focuses on practical work with this page.
Why Does a Trader Need an Economic Calendar?
Prices move calmly for most hours of the day, but in the few minutes after an important data release they can move as much as they do in a full day. A trader who is unaware of the timing of these releases usually experiences one of the following:
- Their stop loss is triggered in a sudden, irrational move and the price immediately reverses.
- Their order is filled at a worse price than expected; a phenomenon called slippage .
- Their trading costs go up, because brokers widen the spread ahead of major news.
An economic calendar reduces these surprises. You don't have to trade every release; simply knowing that a certain figure comes out at 4 p.m. lets you decide whether to close your trade before then, reduce your position size or not enter at all.
Guide to Using the Teagle Economic Calendar
Table Columns: Actual, Forecast and Previous
Each row of the calendar is one event, with its release time in Tehran time, the currency or country it relates to, its importance level and three figures:
- Forecast: The figure analysts expect. Before the release, the market has largely priced in this expectation.
- Previous: The figure for the previous period. Sometimes this figure is revised at the same time as the new release, and the revision itself can move the market.
- Actual: The figure that is released. This column is empty until the moment of release and is filled in afterwards.
The key point is that the market reacts more to the gap between the actual figure and the forecast than to the figure itself. Inflation that has risen but came in below expectations may weaken that country's currency. The arrow next to the actual figure only tells you whether the figure was higher or lower than the forecast, not whether it is good or bad for that currency; because for some data (such as the unemployment rate), a higher figure is a sign of weakness.
Event Importance Levels
Events fall into four categories: high, medium, low and holiday. "High" events are the ones that usually generate the most volatility, and the countdown at the top of the page always shows the nearest one. A country's bank holiday also matters: on that day, liquidity in that country's currency drops and moves can be erratic.
Filters and Reminders
With the filters above the table, you can view only global economy, crypto or Iran events, choose the importance levels you want and limit the table to the currencies you trade; for example, if you only trade EUR/USD , USD and EUR are enough. Your selections are saved in this browser. With "Previous week" and "Next week" you can review the results of past releases or plan for the coming week. Tapping any event opens a simple explanation of it, and you can add it to Google Calendar or your phone's calendar to get a reminder before the release.
Sessions Bar and Teagle Eye Summary
The bar below the countdown shows the Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York sessions in Tehran time. Releases that come out during the London–New York session overlap usually see the highest trading volume and the sharpest reactions. For more details, see the World Market Hours page and the article Forex and Crypto Trading Sessions . The Teagle Eye box also tells you in a few lines how many important events are coming this week and which one arrives first. This summary is built only from the calendar's own data and is not a forecast of market direction.
The Most Important Economic Calendar Events
Out of hundreds of weekly events, a few almost always move the market. The times below are in Tehran time, and since Iran does not observe daylight saving time, they shift by one hour when the US and Europe change their clocks.
| Event | Frequency | Approximate time (Tehran) | Biggest impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal Reserve interest rate decision (FOMC) | 8 times a year | 21:30 summer, 22:30 winter | Dollar, gold, indices, crypto |
| US inflation (CPI) | Monthly | 16:00 summer, 17:00 winter | Dollar and gold |
| US employment report (NFP) | Monthly, usually the first Friday | 16:00 summer, 17:00 winter | Dollar and gold |
| European Central Bank interest rate decision | 8 times a year | 15:45 summer, 16:45 winter | Euro |
| Bank of England interest rate decision | 8 times a year | 14:30 summer, 15:30 winter | Pound |
Interest Rate Decisions and Press Conferences
The interest rate is a central bank's most important tool, and market expectations about its path determine the value of the currency. Often the decision itself is largely predictable in advance, and the main volatility comes in the statement and the press conference that follows, when the bank's head signals what to expect at upcoming meetings. See each bank's latest rate and the date of its next meeting on the Central Bank Interest Rates page.
Inflation and Employment
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the employment report are the two main inputs into the Federal Reserve's decisions. Higher-than-expected inflation raises the likelihood of higher interest rates and usually strengthens the dollar and weakens gold; but this relationship is not permanent, and in periods of anxiety gold can rise alongside the dollar. To understand how this effect works, read the article The Impact of Inflation on Financial Markets .
Crypto and Iran Events
Alongside macro data, the Teagle team adds events that are not in global calendars, such as token unlocks, blockchain network upgrades and Iranian economic data. The crypto market is also sensitive to US news: on days when inflation data or a Federal Reserve decision is released, the Bitcoin price often fluctuates alongside the dollar and gold.
The Impact of News on the Dollar, Gold and Iran's Market
The dollar is the main currency of almost all global trade, so US news has the greatest impact. Gold per ounce has an inverse relationship with the dollar and is sensitive to interest rate expectations; through this channel, US news also reaches the domestic gold price with a slight delay. By contrast, the dollar price in Iran's open market is driven more by domestic and political factors, and the global economic calendar shows only part of the picture.
How to prepare before a major news release
- At the start of the week, check the major events for the currencies you trade and note their times or set reminders.
- Before the release, review your open positions. If a stop loss is too tight, either set it more sensibly or reduce your position size.
- Use the trader's calculator to size your trades so that even with slippage, your loss doesn't exceed your risk limit.
- Don't rush in the first minutes after the release. The initial move often reverses, and spreads are still wide.
- Compare the actual figure with the forecast, not with your own guess, and see how the market has reacted.

FAQ
What time zone does this calendar use?
All times are in Tehran time. Iran does not observe daylight saving time, so when the official time changes in the US or Europe, the release times of their news shift by one hour in Tehran time; for example, US inflation data is released at 16:00 in summer and at 17:00 in winter.
What are the most important economic calendar events?
The Federal Reserve interest rate decision, US inflation (CPI), the US employment report (NFP), and the interest rate decisions of the European Central Bank and the Bank of England. These events affect the dollar, gold and crypto at the same time.
What do forecast, previous and actual mean in the economic calendar?
Forecast is analysts' expectation, previous is the figure for the prior period, and actual is the figure that gets released. The market reacts more to the gap between the actual figure and the forecast than to the figure itself.
Why is a figure above the forecast sometimes good for a currency and sometimes not?
It depends on the type of data. Higher inflation or employment usually means a higher chance of rate hikes and a stronger currency, but higher unemployment is a sign of a weak economy. That's why the calendar arrows only show whether a figure is higher or lower, not whether it's good or bad.
What's the risk of trading right when news is released?
In the first few minutes after major news, broker spreads widen, orders may be filled with slippage, and the price can move sharply in either direction. If you don't have enough experience, it's better to reduce your position size before the news and make decisions once the market calms down.
Where do the crypto and Iran events come from?
These events are added by the Teagle team, such as token unlocks, network upgrades and Iranian economic data releases. Global macroeconomic events are updated automatically every hour.
How do I set a reminder for an event?
Tap the event and choose «Add to Google Calendar» or «Calendar file». The calendar file opens on iPhone and in Outlook and reminds you 15 minutes before the news is released.
