The complete guide to EUR/USD
The euro to dollar price (EUR/USD) shows how many US dollars one euro is worth. This currency pair is the most traded symbol in the forex market and, thanks to its high liquidity and low spread, is the first choice of many beginner and professional traders. On this page you can see the live EUR/USD rate, its candlestick chart and technical events, and further down you will learn about the factors that affect this pair, the best trading hours and risk management tips.
What is the EUR/USD currency pair?
In every currency pair, the first currency is the "base currency" and the second is the "quote currency". In EUR/USD, the euro is the base currency and the US dollar is the quote currency; so a value of 1.1000 means one euro equals 1.1 dollars. When this number rises, the euro has strengthened against the dollar, and when it falls, the dollar has become stronger.
The euro is the official currency of more than twenty European countries; it entered the market in electronic transactions in 1999 and as banknotes and coins in 2002. Traders have nicknamed this pair "Fiber". According to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Triennial Survey, about one-fifth of the total daily trading volume in the global currency market is in EUR/USD.
Note that EUR/USD is different from the euro rate in the Iranian market. See the Toman rate of the euro on the euro price page and the Toman rate of the dollar on the dollar price page; the ratio of these two numbers is usually close to the global EUR/USD.
Factors affecting the euro to dollar price
1. The interest rate gap between Europe and the US
The most important long-term driver of EUR/USD is the gap between the interest rates of the European Central Bank (ECB) and the US Federal Reserve (Fed). When the Fed is expected to keep rates higher or raise them, the dollar becomes more attractive and EUR/USD usually falls; conversely, a more hawkish tone from the ECB favors the euro. The meetings of these two central banks are among the most volatile days for this pair.
2. Economic data
Inflation figures (CPI in the US and HICP in the eurozone), the US Non-Farm Payrolls report (NFP), usually released on the first Friday of each month, Purchasing Managers' Indexes (PMI), economic growth (GDP) and data on Germany's economy as the largest in the eurozone all affect this pair. See the exact release times of this data and market forecasts in the Teagle economic calendar .
3. Global dollar strength
The euro has the largest weight in the US Dollar Index (DXY); that is why EUR/USD is almost an inverse mirror of this index. Anything that strengthens the dollar globally, such as capital flight to safe US assets during crises, usually pushes EUR/USD down.
4. Political and energy risks
Elections in major European countries, debt crises, war and especially energy prices (Europe is a major energy importer) can weaken the euro.
The best time to trade EUR/USD
The forex market is open around the clock from Monday to Friday, but not all hours are the same for EUR/USD. The highest volume and movement usually occur during the London and New York session overlap , which is the afternoon and evening Tehran time (roughly 15:30 to 19:30 during European summer months and 16:30 to 20:30 in winter). The Asian session hours are usually calmer with smaller moves. Check the exact opening and closing times of each market with the global market hours tool in Iran time.
Pip value and trade size
In EUR/USD, each pip equals the fourth decimal place (0.0001). Since the quote currency is the dollar, the pip value is fixed and simple:
| Trade size | Contract size | Pip value |
|---|---|---|
| 1 standard lot | 100,000 euros | 10 dollars |
| 0.1 lot (mini) | 10,000 euros | 1 dollar |
| 0.01 lot (micro) | 1,000 euros | 0.1 dollar |
With the "Pip value" tool on this page you can calculate it for any size you want. If you hold a position overnight, also take the holding cost or gain (swap) into account; calculate it with the swap calculator .
EUR/USD in technical analysis
Because of its very high trading volume, EUR/USD usually respects technical levels and its moves are "cleaner" than those of low-volume pairs. Some of its common characteristics:
- Round numbers and psychological levels: Levels such as 1.0000 (euro-dollar parity), 1.0500 or 1.1000 often act as support and resistance, because many orders cluster around them.
- Long trends: Because its main driver is the monetary policy gap between two major central banks, EUR/USD trends can last for months; trading against the main trend carries more risk.
- Moderate daily volatility: EUR/USD is calmer than pairs such as the pound to yen and is better suited for learning and lower-risk strategies.

Common styles of trading euro dollar
- Day Trading: Opening and closing trades within the same day, usually during the London and New York overlap; it requires discipline and sticking to your stop loss.
- Swing trading: Holding trades from a few days to a few weeks based on the trend and key levels; swap costs become important in this style.
- News trading: Entering after major data releases; because of slippage and widening spreads, it is only suitable for experienced traders.
EUR/USD correlation with other symbols
Understanding correlations helps you avoid unintentionally opening several trades in the same direction and doubling your risk:
- Positive correlation: The pound to dollar (GBP/USD) usually moves in the same direction as EUR/USD, because both are measured against the dollar. Gold ounce also rises with a weaker dollar in many periods.
- Negative correlation: The dollar to Swiss franc (USD/CHF) and the dollar index usually move opposite to EUR/USD.
Risk management tips for trading EUR/USD
- Control your leverage: The low spread of EUR/USD should not tempt you into using high leverage; limit the risk of each trade to a small percentage of your account and set a stop loss.
- Be careful around major news: At the moment NFP or an interest rate decision is released, spreads widen and the price may move several dozen pips in a few seconds.
- Choose a reputable broker: Execution quality, real spreads and the broker's regulation status directly affect your final results. Before signing up, forex broker reviews and if the bonus on offer tempts you, check its withdrawal conditions on the broker bonuses page .
