The complete guide to EUR/NZD

Teagle editorial team· updated October 22, 2026 · reading time 5 min

The euro to New Zealand dollar price (EUR/NZD) shows how many New Zealand dollars one euro is worth. This currency pair links two economies at opposite ends of the world: the eurozone, one of the largest economies in the world, and New Zealand, a small, open economy that relies on agricultural exports. The result is a cross with lower liquidity, wider spreads and large daily moves that is better suited to experienced traders. On this page you can see the live EUR/NZD rate, its candlestick chart and technical events, and below you will learn about the features, drivers and trading tips for this currency pair.

What is EUR/NZD?

EUR/NZD is a "cross" currency pair, meaning the US dollar is not part of it. The euro is the base currency and the New Zealand dollar is the quote currency; if the number rises, the euro has strengthened, and if it falls, the New Zealand dollar, which traders call the "Kiwi", has become stronger. The nickname comes from New Zealand's national bird, which appears on the country's one-dollar coin.

The price of this cross is roughly obtained by dividing euro to dollar (EUR/USD) by New Zealand dollar to dollar (NZD/USD) . Because the trading volume of the New Zealand dollar is small compared with the euro, this pair is considered one of the lower-volume crosses, and its spread is usually noticeably wider than EUR/USD, especially during low-volume hours and when news is released.

The New Zealand dollar is not actively traded on Iran's open market, and a reference Toman rate for it is usually not available. If you need it for tuition or immigration costs, combine the euro to Toman rate with EUR/NZD to get an estimate of its value.

New Zealand's economy and what moves the Kiwi

Dairy and agricultural exports

Dairy products are New Zealand's largest export item, and their global prices directly affect the country's foreign currency income. The regularly held Global Dairy Trade auctions are among the data Kiwi traders follow. Rising dairy prices usually benefit NZD and weigh on EUR/NZD.

China and the Asia-Pacific region

China is New Zealand's key trading partner, so Chinese economic data and demand conditions in Asia affect the Kiwi through exports. The New Zealand dollar, like the Australian dollar, is considered a "risk currency" and usually weakens during periods of market fear.

Two central banks: ECB and RBNZ

The European Central Bank (ECB) sets the eurozone interest rate, and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) sets New Zealand's interest rate. The RBNZ holds a special place in the history of central banking: after New Zealand's Reserve Bank Act of 1989, it became the first central bank to formally implement "inflation targeting", an approach later adopted by most central banks around the world.

RBNZ decisions are usually announced in the early morning Tehran time and can move EUR/NZD before European markets open. The interest rate gap between the two sides affects both the long-term direction of this pair and its swap; compare the current rates on the central bank interest rates page.

Key data and trading hours

EurozoneHICP inflation, PMI, German data, ECB decisionNoon to evening

An important point is that some key New Zealand data, such as inflation and the labor market, are released quarterly, not monthly, so each release carries more weight. The exact timing of all these events is listed in the Teagle economic calendar .

New Zealand is the first market to open each week, on Sunday evening Tehran time, while Europe is still on its weekend. Volume during these hours is very low, and the price may open with a "gap" relative to Friday's close. The highest EUR/NZD volume is usually seen while Europe is open, especially from morning to evening Tehran time. Check the sessions on the world market hours page.

Pip value and volatility

A pip in EUR/NZD is the fourth decimal place (0.0001), and its value is expressed in the quote currency: for one standard lot (100,000 euros) each pip is 10 New Zealand dollars, for 0.1 lot 1 New Zealand dollar, and for 0.01 lot 0.1 New Zealand dollar. To convert to US dollars, multiply this number by the NZD/USD rate. Calculate the right position size and swap cost with the Teagle trading calculator .

The daily range of EUR/NZD is usually large, and together with the wider spread, this means the stop loss needs to be placed farther away and the position size needs to be smaller so that the risk of each trade stays within an acceptable range.

Technically, EUR/NZD sometimes forms long trends tied to the cycle of agricultural commodity prices and the diverging monetary policy paths of Europe and New Zealand. At the same time, because of low volume, false breakouts of levels during quiet market hours are not uncommon; confirmation of a breakout during high-volume European hours is usually more reliable. The "Technical events" section of this page summarizes recent indicator signals for this symbol.

Correlation with other symbols

  • Euro to Australian dollar (EUR/AUD): Because of the similar economies and trade ties between Australia and New Zealand, these two crosses often move in the same direction.
  • Pound to New Zealand dollar (GBP/NZD): Any move that originates from the Kiwi side is usually seen in this pair as well.
  • NZD/USD: Because the Kiwi is in the denominator, it usually has a negative correlation with EUR/NZD.

Risk management tips

  • Start the week with caution: Monday gaps and wide spreads in the early hours can cause your stop loss to be filled at an unfavorable price.
  • Limit trading similar crosses at the same time: Buying EUR/NZD and EUR/AUD at the same time is effectively one trade with double the risk.
  • Compare broker conditions: Spreads on low-volume crosses vary widely between brokers, and Iranian users have limited options due to sanctions; before signing up, check the forex broker reviews .
