The complete guide to GBP/NZD
The British pound to New Zealand dollar price (GBP/NZD) shows how many New Zealand dollars one British pound is worth. This pair usually ranks among the most volatile forex crosses: two currencies that are each lively on their own, from opposite sides of the globe and with the least overlap in business hours. On this page you can see the live GBP/NZD rate, the candlestick chart and technical events, and below you can read why this pair behaves differently, what moves it and how to manage the risk of trading it.
What is GBP/NZD?
Currency pairs without the US dollar are called "crosses". In GBP/NZD, the pound is the base currency and the New Zealand dollar (the "kiwi") is the quote currency; a rising number means the pound has strengthened, and a falling one means the kiwi has strengthened.
Mathematically, this cross is roughly obtained by dividing the pound to US dollar (GBP/USD) by the New Zealand dollar to US dollar (NZD/USD) . Because market makers usually price this cross using these same two major pairs, the GBP/NZD spread partly carries the cost of both legs, which is why it is usually among the widest spreads of the common crosses.
The New Zealand dollar is not commonly bought and sold on Iran's open market. If you need a Toman estimate for studying or emigrating to New Zealand, you can divide the pound to Toman rate by GBP/NZD to get an approximate value for one New Zealand dollar.
Why GBP/NZD is not suitable for beginners
| Feature | EUR/USD | GBP/NZD |
|---|---|---|
| Liquidity | Highest in the forex market | Low |
| Spread | Usually very low | Usually much higher |
| Daily range | Moderate | Usually large |
| Overlap of the two countries' business hours | A few hours of London–New York overlap | Almost none |
The UK and New Zealand are about half a day apart; when London is working, New Zealand is asleep, and vice versa. As a result, each side of this pair moves the price during its own hours without a simultaneous reaction from the other side, and moves can be extended and sudden.
Factors affecting the GBP/NZD price
The Bank of England and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand
The Bank of England (BoE) sets UK interest rates, and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) announces its policy rate as the "Official Cash Rate" (OCR). In addition to the rate decision, the RBNZ publishes a more detailed "Monetary Policy Statement" at some meetings, which usually has a bigger impact on the kiwi. You can see the interest rate gap between the two countries, which is also the basis of the overnight swap, in central bank interest rates .
Agricultural commodities and China
New Zealand's exports depend on dairy, meat and timber, and China is its key trading partner. Global dairy prices and Chinese economic data affect the NZD through this channel.
UK economy and politics
Inflation and wages, economic growth, and UK political and fiscal developments are constant drivers of the pound.
Global risk sentiment
The kiwi is a risk currency and usually weakens during periods of market fear; the pound does not behave consistently in these conditions. For this reason, GBP/NZD often rises during risk-off waves, although this rule does not always hold.
Follow the release dates for both countries' inflation and employment data and central bank meetings in the Teagle economic calendar ; remember that New Zealand's inflation and labour market data are released quarterly, and each release carries a lot of weight.
GBP/NZD trading times
New Zealand data and decisions are usually released at night or early morning Tehran time, while the pound becomes active from the London open, around 10:30 during European summer and 11:30 in winter. Most of this pair's volume usually forms during the London session. On Sunday evening Tehran time, when the New Zealand market opens the week, volume is very low and gaps and wide spreads are likely. Check the sessions and the clock changes in the two hemispheres in global market hours .
Pip value and proper position size
A pip in GBP/NZD is the fourth decimal place (0.0001). For one standard lot (100,000 pounds), each pip is worth 10 New Zealand dollars; for 0.1 lot it is 1 dollar, and for 0.01 lot 0.1 New Zealand dollar. For a USD account, multiply this figure by the NZD/USD rate.
In this pair, sizing positions correctly matters twice as much: first decide what percentage of your account you are willing to risk on one trade, then set the stop-loss distance based on GBP/NZD's typical volatility, and finally derive the position size from these two. Because stop-losses in this cross usually need to be wider, the proper size will be smaller than in calmer pairs. The Teagle trading calculator does this calculation along with the swap.
Technical behaviour and swap
GBP/NZD's large range means support and resistance levels act more like "zones" than precise lines; the price may break through a level for a while and then come back. That is why many traders of this pair rely on higher timeframes such as the 4-hour and daily, so that short-term noise misleads them less.
Swap also matters in this cross. When the interest rate gap between the UK and New Zealand is large, holding a position in one direction may earn a small amount each night and cost in the other direction; this amount changes with every shift in monetary policy. Before multi-day trades, check your broker's actual swap.
Correlation with other symbols
- The pound to Australian dollar (GBP/AUD): Because the Australian and New Zealand dollars are similar, these two often move in the same direction.
- The euro to New Zealand dollar (EUR/NZD): Moves that start on the kiwi side show up in both.

Risk management tips
- Weigh the spread cost: In short-term trading, GBP/NZD's wide spread can wipe out a large part of the potential profit.
- Low leverage: The combination of high volatility and low liquidity makes high leverage very dangerous.
- Compare brokers: Conditions on low-volume crosses vary significantly between brokers, and Iranian users have limited options due to sanctions; forex broker reviews should be read before signing up.
