The complete guide to GBP/CHF
The British pound to Swiss franc price (GBP/CHF) shows how many Swiss francs one British pound is worth. In this pair, the pound, which is sensitive to UK economic and political news, is set against the franc, one of the best-known safe-haven currencies in the world. This combination makes GBP/CHF a good mirror of risk sentiment in Europe. On this page you can see the live GBP/CHF rate, the candlestick chart and technical events, and further down you will learn about the structure of this cross, its two central banks, pip value and risk management tips.
GBP/CHF: a European cross
Currency pairs that do not include the US dollar are called "crosses". In GBP/CHF, the pound is the base currency and the Swiss franc is the quote currency; a rising number means the pound has strengthened, and a falling one means the franc has become stronger.
This cross can be built in two ways. The common way is multiplying the pound to dollar (GBP/USD) by the dollar to franc (USD/CHF). The second way, which is more useful for European analysis, is combining the euro to franc (EUR/CHF) with the euro to pound (EUR/GBP) ; GBP/CHF is roughly equal to EUR/CHF divided by EUR/GBP. Seen this way, every GBP/CHF move can be split into two parts: what comes from the franc's strength or weakness in Europe, and what comes from the pound's position against the euro. GBP/CHF has lower liquidity than the major pairs, and its spread is usually wider.
In the Iranian market, the pound has higher trading volume than the franc. See the Toman rates of both on pound price and Swiss franc price ; the ratio of these two rates is usually close to the global GBP/CHF, but because of the low trading volume of the franc in the open market, the gap sometimes widens.
Two central banks with two different traditions
Bank of England (BoE)
The Bank of England, with an official inflation target of 2%, sets interest rates through its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). Committee members' votes are published individually, and this vote split is often as important for the pound as the decision itself.
Swiss National Bank (SNB)
The Swiss National Bank publishes a monetary policy assessment once a quarter and, unlike most central banks, openly counts direct intervention in the currency market among its tools. In the past, to prevent excessive franc strength, the bank has both applied negative interest rates and sold francs in the currency market. The sudden removal of the EUR/CHF floor in January 2015 sent not only EUR/CHF but all franc pairs, including GBP/CHF, into a sharp plunge within minutes; a reminder that SNB risk is always present in this pair.
Swiss interest rates have been lower than UK rates in most years; this gap has a direct effect on GBP/CHF swaps. Compare the current figures in central bank interest rates .
Factors affecting the pound to franc price
- Fear and confidence in markets: in crises, capital flows to the franc and GBP/CHF usually falls; in calm periods, the pound has more room to recover.
- UK data: inflation (CPI), labour market and wages, GDP and retail sales.
- Swiss data: Swiss inflation, which is traditionally low and the basis of SNB decisions, and leading economic indicators.
- UK political events: from the Brexit referendum in 2016 to the "mini-budget" crisis in 2022, the pound has repeatedly made sharp moves because of domestic politics; in GBP/CHF these moves are amplified by capital seeking refuge in the franc.

Best time to trade GBP/CHF
Both currencies in this pair belong to Europe, and UK and Swiss data are released in the European morning. So the highest GBP/CHF volume is in the London session: roughly 10:30 to 19:30 Tehran time during European summer and 11:30 to 20:30 in winter, with the most active part in the early hours of this window. In the Asian session and after London closes, volume is low and the spread is wider. See the exact hours in world market hours .
Pip value in GBP/CHF
A pip in this pair is the fourth decimal place (0.0001). For one standard lot (100,000 pounds), each pip is worth 10 Swiss francs; for 0.1 lot, 1 franc, and for 0.01 lot, 0.1 franc. To convert to dollars, divide this number by the USD/CHF rate. Calculate the right position size based on your stop-loss distance, as well as swap costs, with Teagle's trading calculator .
Technical behaviour and trading styles
GBP/CHF often has fairly orderly trends in calm periods, but on risk-off days or during unexpected UK news, sharp breakouts and intraday gaps appear. A few tips for common styles:
- Day trading: focus on the early London hours when UK data is released; factor in the spread before entering.
- Swing trading: because the two countries' interest rates usually differ, buy and sell swaps are different and have a noticeable effect on results over holds of several weeks.
- Watching EUR/GBP and EUR/CHF: if both move in line with your view, the GBP/CHF move has more support; if not, it is more likely that the move is driven only by short-term news.
- Comparison with volatile pound crosses: GBP/CHF usually has a smaller daily range than crosses such as GBP/NZD ; so calculate stop-loss size and position size separately for each symbol.

Risk management tips
- Take franc gap risk seriously: the 2015 experience showed that in franc pairs, a stop-loss may be executed far from the set price.
- Remove duplicate risks: selling GBP/CHF and EUR/CHF at the same time is in practice one big bet on a stronger franc.
- Check your broker: pay attention to negative balance protection, regulation and the real spreads on crosses. Iranian users have limited options because of sanctions; before signing up, read forex broker reviews .
