The complete guide to EUR/AUD

Teagle editorial team· updated October 22, 2026 · reading time 5 min

The euro to Australian dollar price (EUR/AUD) shows how many Australian dollars one euro is worth. This currency pair puts two very different economies side by side: the eurozone, with an industrial economy dependent on energy imports, and Australia, an economy that earns a large share of its export income from raw materials. On this page you can see the live EUR/AUD rate, its candlestick chart and its technical events, and below you can read how this cross is formed, what moves it and how to calculate its pip value.

EUR/AUD: a cross currency pair

Currency pairs that do not include the US dollar are called "crosses". In EUR/AUD, the euro is the base currency and the Australian dollar is the quote currency; a rising number means the euro has strengthened against the Australian dollar, and a falling one means the Australian dollar, which traders call the "Aussie", has strengthened.

Mathematically, EUR/AUD is roughly equal to the euro to dollar (EUR/USD) divided by the Australian dollar to dollar (AUD/USD). This relationship helps you figure out where a move came from: if EUR/USD has stayed flat and EUR/AUD has risen, the cause is probably Australian dollar weakness, not euro strength. Trading volume in this cross is lower than in the major pairs and its spread is usually wider, especially during low-volume hours and when news is released.

If you deal with Toman rates, see the open-market price on the euro price and Australian dollar price pages. In the Iranian market, the Australian dollar is mostly bought for study, immigration and travel expenses, and the ratio of the Toman rates of these two currencies is usually close to the global EUR/AUD.

These very differences mean that EUR/AUD sometimes behaves completely independently of EUR/USD, making it an interesting instrument for those who want to trade their view on China's economy or the raw materials market.

Factors affecting the euro to Australian dollar price

1. ECB and RBA monetary policy

The interest rate gap between the eurozone and Australia shapes both the long-term direction of this pair and its swap cost. Statements and press conferences after RBA meetings are usually released in the morning Tehran time and can shake the Australian side of this cross. Compare current rates on the central bank interest rates page.

2. China's economy and raw material prices

China is the largest buyer of Australian exports. Chinese industrial production and trade data, along with changes in iron ore prices, affect the AUD through Australia's export income. Booming Chinese demand usually benefits the Australian dollar and weighs on EUR/AUD.

3. Key data on both sides

On the Australian side: the monthly labor market report, inflation and retail sales data. On the European side: HICP inflation, PMI indices and German economic data. See the release times for all of these in Tehran time on the Teagle economic calendar .

4. Global risk appetite

The Australian dollar is considered a "risk currency"; during periods of fear and stock market sell-offs, capital flows out of it and EUR/AUD usually rises. During periods of optimism, the opposite behavior is more common.

5. Swap and interest rate differential

If you hold a position for more than one day, the interest rate differential between the two currencies is applied to your account as a daily swap. In EUR/AUD, the direction and size of the swap depend on the interest rate gap between Europe and Australia and change with every shift in monetary policy; so for multi-week trades, count the swap as a core cost just like the spread.

Best time to trade EUR/AUD

The Australian side of this pair is active during the Sydney and Tokyo sessions, that is, from midnight to around noon Tehran time. The European side comes into play with the London open, roughly 10:30 in European summer and 11:30 in winter. The Tehran morning hours, when the Asian market is still open and Europe has just started, are usually the most active part of the day for EUR/AUD. The final New York hours and the gap between the US close and the Sydney open are the lowest-volume time, and the spread usually widens then. Check the exact session times as clocks change in Europe and Australia on the global market hours page; these two regions change their clocks in opposite directions.

Pip value in EUR/AUD

A pip in this pair is the fourth decimal place (0.0001), and its value is first calculated in the quote currency, i.e. the Australian dollar:

  • 1 standard lot (100,000 euros): 10 Australian dollars per pip
  • 0.1 lot: 1 Australian dollar
  • 0.01 lot: 0.1 Australian dollar

If your account is in dollars, multiply this figure by the AUD/USD rate. Since the Australian dollar is usually worth less than the US dollar, the dollar value of each pip in EUR/AUD is less than 10 dollars; however, this cross's daily range is usually larger than EUR/USD's, and the two effects partly offset each other. Technical behavior and correlations

  • Trends driven by the commodity cycle: Long periods of boom or bust in raw material prices can create multi-month trends in EUR/AUD.
  • Negative correlation with AUD/USD: Because AUD is in the denominator, weakness in AUD/USD usually leads to a rise in EUR/AUD.
  • Close relative: The pound to Australian dollar (GBP/AUD) often follows a similar pattern; trading both in the same direction doubles the risk.
  • Similarly structured euro crosses: EUR/NZD is often in the same direction as EUR/AUD because of the similarity between the Australian and New Zealand dollars, and EUR/CAD also pits the euro against another commodity currency.

Risk management tips

  • Factor in the spread: In crosses, the spread is a larger share of the trading cost and grows even more during low-volume hours.
  • Follow news from both continents: EUR/AUD reacts both to morning data from Australia and China and to European afternoon news; that means it is exposed to news several times a day.
  • Choose your broker carefully: Iranian users have limited options because of sanctions, and conditions on crosses vary widely between brokers; before signing up Read the reviews of forex brokers .
