The complete guide to GBP/AUD

Teagle editorial team· updated October 22, 2026 · reading time 5 min

The British pound to Australian dollar price (GBP/AUD) shows how many Australian dollars one British pound is worth. This pair is known among forex crosses for its large daily range; on one side is the pound, backed by Britain's services and financial economy, and on the other the Australian dollar, backed by an economy reliant on raw material exports. On this page you can see the live GBP/AUD rate, the candlestick chart and technical events, and below you'll learn about the structure of this cross, the factors that affect it, the value of each pip and risk management tips.

GBP/AUD: a volatile cross

Currency pairs that don't include the US dollar are called "crosses". In GBP/AUD, the pound is the base currency and the Australian dollar is the quote currency; when the number rises the pound has strengthened, and when it falls the Australian dollar (the "Aussie") has strengthened.

This cross is roughly equal to the pound to dollar (GBP/USD) divided by the Australian dollar to dollar (AUD/USD). When these two major pairs move in opposite directions, for example the pound strengthens and the Australian dollar weakens, their effects add up in GBP/AUD and produce a bigger move than either one alone. This is one of the main reasons for this pair's high volatility. GBP/AUD trading volume is lower than that of the major pairs, and its spread is usually noticeably wider than EUR/USD.

Both the pound and the Australian dollar are bought and sold in the Iranian market, mostly for study, immigration and travel. You can see their Toman rates on the pound price and Australian dollar price pages; the ratio of these two rates is usually close to the global GBP/AUD, and for someone comparing two study destinations, this ratio is a useful benchmark.

Of course, the Iranian market has its own rules: limited supply and demand, the gap between exchange offices' buy and sell rates, and the delay in rate updates mean the Toman ratio of the pound to the Australian dollar is not always exactly equal to the global GBP/AUD. If you plan to convert a large amount, comparing this ratio with the global rate can show which currency is trading relatively more expensive or cheaper in the domestic market.

Factors affecting the pound to Australian dollar price

1. BoE and RBA monetary policy divergence

The long-term direction of GBP/AUD largely depends on which central bank the market expects to be more hawkish. Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee meetings and the outcome of its members' vote, as well as the RBA statement and press conference, are among the most volatile moments for this pair. See the current interest rate gap between the two countries on central bank interest rates ; this same gap is also the basis of the overnight swap.

2. China and raw materials

Any news that changes the outlook for Chinese demand or iron ore prices affects GBP/AUD through the Australian dollar, even if no news has come out of the UK.

3. Economic data from both countries

From the UK side: inflation (CPI), the labor market and wages, GDP and retail sales. From the Australian side: the monthly employment report, inflation data and retail sales. Follow the schedule for all of these in the Teagle economic calendar in Tehran time.

4. UK political risk

In recent years the pound has shown strong sensitivity to domestic political events, from elections to the government budget; this sensitivity is more pronounced in crosses like GBP/AUD with higher inherent volatility.

Best time to trade GBP/AUD

This pair has two activity peaks during the day. In the Tehran morning, when the Sydney and Tokyo sessions are open, Australian and Chinese data are released and the AUD side is active. Then, with the London open, around 10:30 during European summer and 11:30 in winter, UK data and the highest pound trading volume enter the market. The short Asia–London overlap hours are usually the most active part of the day. Note that Europe and Australia change their daylight saving time in opposite directions; check exact session times on world market hours .

Pip value and position size

A pip in GBP/AUD is the fourth decimal place (0.0001) and its value is expressed in Australian dollars:

  • 1 standard lot (100,000 pounds): 10 Australian dollars per pip
  • 0.1 lot: 1 Australian dollar
  • 0.01 lot: 0.1 Australian dollar

For a USD account, multiply this number by the AUD/USD rate. The key point with GBP/AUD is that because its daily move is usually much larger than that of calm pairs, with the same volume you trade in EUR/USD, your dollar risk in this pair will be much higher. Before entering, calculate your volume based on the stop-loss distance and risk percentage; the Teagle trading calculator makes this easy.

Technical behavior and correlation

  • Extended moves: GBP/AUD sometimes covers in one day the distance major pairs travel in several days; false breakouts of levels are also not uncommon.
  • Related pairs: The euro to Australian dollar (EUR/AUD) moves in the same direction as GBP/AUD on most days, since both have the Australian dollar on the quote side.
  • Other pound crosses: GBP/CAD and GBP/CHF also have the pound on the base side, and major UK news is usually seen in all of them at the same time.
  • Relationship with AUD/USD: Usually negatively correlated; Australian dollar weakness against the US dollar often pushes GBP/AUD higher.

Risk management tips

  • Reduce leverage: High volatility and a wider spread mean mistakes in position size are punished faster.
  • Look at the total cost: Calculate the spread, commission and swap together; in crosses these costs are higher than in major pairs.
  • Check the broker: Because of sanctions, Iranian users have access to a limited number of foreign brokers, and the quality of cross execution varies among them; forex broker reviews should be read before signing up.
