The complete guide to GBP/CAD

Teagle editorial team· updated October 22, 2026 · reading time 5 min

The pound to Canadian dollar price (GBP/CAD) shows how many Canadian dollars one British pound is worth. This currency pair pits Britain's services- and finance-based economy against Canada's oil-driven, export-oriented economy, and it is one of the more active crosses in the forex market. On this page you can see the live GBP/CAD rate, the candlestick chart and technical events, and below you can read how this cross is built from two major pairs, what moves it, and how to calculate its pip value.

What is GBP/CAD?

A currency pair that does not include the US dollar is called a "cross". In GBP/CAD, the pound is the base currency and the Canadian dollar is the quote currency. If the number rises, the pound has strengthened against the Canadian dollar; if it falls, the "loonie" has become stronger.

This cross is roughly the product of the pound to dollar (GBP/USD) and the US dollar to Canadian dollar (USD/CAD) . This relationship has a practical use: when GBP/CAD makes a sharp move, you can look at these two pairs to tell whether the move came from the pound or the Canadian dollar. If GBP/USD is roughly flat and USD/CAD has fallen, the move came from the Canadian side and is probably related to oil or Canadian data. GBP/CAD is less liquid than the major pairs and its spread is usually wider.

In the Iranian market, the pound and the Canadian dollar are traded mostly for education, immigration and family money transfers. You can see their Toman rates on the pound price and Canadian dollar price pages; the ratio of these two rates is usually close to the global GBP/CAD.

Factors affecting the pound to Canadian dollar price

1. Oil prices

Canada is one of the world's largest oil producers, and oil makes up a significant share of its exports. Britain also extracts oil and gas from the North Sea, but its economy is far less dependent on energy revenue than Canada's, and it imports part of its energy. For this reason, rising oil prices usually benefit the Canadian dollar more and put downward pressure on GBP/CAD. Keep the crude oil chart in mind to better understand this pair's moves; this relationship is not permanent, though.

2. BoE and BoC monetary policy

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee and the Bank of Canada both make decisions on pre-announced dates. Bank of England decisions are usually announced around midday Tehran time and Bank of Canada decisions in the evening; this means GBP/CAD becomes volatile at different hours on each bank's meeting day. See the interest rate gap between the two countries on the central bank interest rates page.

3. UK political and fiscal risk

The pound is sensitive to government fiscal policy. A well-known example is September 2022: the announcement of a tax-cut package without a clear funding source (the so-called "mini-budget") caused a sharp fall in the pound and the UK bond market, and the Bank of England was forced to intervene in the bond market. Events like this create unusual moves in pound crosses, including GBP/CAD.

4. Canada's link to the US economy

The United States is Canada's largest trading partner. US economic data and trade policy affect the Canadian dollar through this channel, even though the US dollar is not directly part of this pair.

Best time to trade GBP/CAD

The pound becomes active with the London open, but the Canadian side of this pair stays quiet until the North American market opens. That is why GBP/CAD volume and volatility are usually highest during the London and New York/Toronto overlap; roughly 15:30 to 19:30 Tehran time during European summer and 16:30 to 20:30 in winter. After London closes, volume drops, and during the Asian session this pair is usually calm with a wider spread. Check the exact hours on the global market hours page.

A common pattern on normal days is that the pound sets the day's initial direction during the London morning, and as North American traders come in, Canadian data and oil prices confirm or reverse that direction. For this reason, do not treat GBP/CAD's morning moves as final until the evening, Tehran time.

GBP/CAD pip value

A pip in this pair is the fourth decimal place (0.0001). For one standard lot (100,000 pounds), each pip is worth 10 Canadian dollars; for 0.1 lot, 1 Canadian dollar, and for 0.01 lot, 0.1 Canadian dollar. If your account is in US dollars, divide this number by the USD/CAD rate; so the dollar value of each pip changes as the Canadian dollar rate changes. Technical behaviour and correlation

  • More volatile than euro crosses: GBP/CAD usually has a larger daily range than EUR/CAD , because the pound on its own is more volatile than the euro. In this respect, GBP/CAD, alongside crosses such as GBP/AUD , belongs to the group of fast-moving pound crosses.
  • Positive correlation with EUR/CAD and USD/CAD: all three have the Canadian dollar on the quote side, and loonie weakness usually lifts them all.
  • Inverse relationship with oil: in many periods, a jump in oil comes with a fall in GBP/CAD.

Risk management tips

  • Jobs Fridays: the simultaneous release of Canadian and US employment data can widen spreads and cause slippage.
  • Know your overlapping risks: trading GBP/CAD, EUR/CAD and oil at the same time may in practice be a triple bet on the Canadian dollar.
  • Choose your broker carefully: because of sanctions, Iranian users usually work with foreign brokers, and spreads on crosses differ among them; read the forex broker reviews before signing up.
