The complete guide to EUR/GBP

Teagle editorial team· updated October 22, 2026 · reading time 5 min

The EUR/GBP price (EUR/GBP) shows how many pounds sterling one euro is worth. This symbol is a "cross currency pair", or cross; that is, the US dollar is not part of it, and it directly compares the strength of two neighboring economies in Europe. On this page you can see the live EUR/GBP rate, its candlestick chart and technical events, and further down you will learn about the features of crosses, the effect of Brexit, the monetary policy contest between the European Central Bank and the Bank of England, and the best hours to trade this pair.

What is the EUR/GBP pair?

In EUR/GBP, the euro is the base currency and the pound is the quote currency. A value of 0.8500 means each euro is worth 0.85 pounds. A rising number means the euro has strengthened against the pound, and a falling one means the pound has strengthened.

Mathematically, EUR/GBP is roughly equal to EUR/USD (EUR/USD) divided by GBP/USD (GBP/USD) . This relationship has an important use: when the dollar strengthens or weakens globally and moves both dollar pairs in the same direction, EUR/GBP usually changes little. So this symbol removes the "dollar effect" and only shows whether the market sees the eurozone economy or the UK as stronger.

In the Iranian market you can also see the ratio of these two currencies: compare the Toman rates of the euro and the pound ; their ratio is usually close to the global EUR/GBP, although the domestic open market sometimes diverges.

Why is EUR/GBP usually calmer?

The eurozone and the UK are neighbors, have similar economic cycles, face similar inflation, energy and global shocks, and a large share of their trade is with each other. For this reason, global news usually affects both currencies at the same time and in the same direction, and the gap between them changes less. The result is that in most periods EUR/GBP has lower daily volatility than the dollar pairs and moves within fairly well-defined ranges for months.

This calm is not permanent. In periods when something happens to only one of the two sides, EUR/GBP can make sharp moves and long trends; the clearest example was the Brexit referendum in 2016, which sharply weakened the pound against the euro as well.

Factors affecting the EUR/GBP price

1. The monetary policy gap between the ECB and the Bank of England

The main driver of EUR/GBP is the difference in the interest rate paths of the European Central Bank and the Bank of England. If the market expects the Bank of England to keep rates higher than the ECB, the pound becomes more attractive and EUR/GBP usually falls; and vice versa. Since the two banks usually decide within weeks of each other, comparing their tone matters a lot. See current rates in global interest rates .

2. Economic data from both sides

Eurozone HICP inflation and UK CPI, UK wage growth, PMI indices for both regions, GDP and German data are the most important releases. Unlike dollar pairs, US data has less direct impact on this symbol. Follow release times in the Teagle economic calendar .

3. Politics and trade relations

UK–EU trade relations after Brexit, elections in the UK or major eurozone countries, and debt or budget crises on either side can upset the balance of this pair.

Best time to trade EUR/GBP

Since both currencies are European, almost all meaningful EUR/GBP activity takes place in the London session ; that is, roughly from 10:30 AM to 19:30 Tehran time during European summer and from 11:30 to 20:30 in winter. UK and eurozone data are also released in the European morning. Unlike dollar pairs, the New York overlap offers no special advantage for this symbol, and in the Asian session it usually moves little and has wider spreads.

PeriodTypical EUR/GBP behavior
Asian sessionVery low volatility, wider spreads
European morning and London openEuropean and UK data releases, highest activity
European afternoonContinued activity at lower intensity

Pip value in EUR/GBP

In EUR/GBP each pip is 0.0001. Since the quote currency is the pound, the pip value for one standard lot (100,000 euros) is 10 pounds, for 0.1 lot 1 pound and for 0.01 lot 0.1 pound. To convert to dollars, this figure is multiplied by the GBP/USD rate; since the pound is usually worth more than one dollar, the dollar value of each pip in this pair is usually more than 10 dollars. The "pip value" tool on this page and the trading calculator do this calculation with the live rate.

EUR/GBP in technical analysis

In ranging periods, the highs and lows of EUR/GBP's multi-month ranges become very important, and oscillators like RSI, which are designed for trendless markets, are more useful. But when a fundamental factor, such as a change of direction by one of the two central banks, breaks the range, these same indicators may give false signals for a long time. That is why it is better to check technical signals alongside the ECB and Bank of England decision calendar. A summary of this symbol's technical events is shown on this page.

Common EUR/GBP trading styles

  • Range trading: Because of lower volatility and long periods of range-bound movement, some traders use range highs and lows; a range breakout after unexpected news is the biggest risk of this approach.
  • Trading on monetary policy divergence: Following ECB and Bank of England divergence for multi-week trends.
  • Analysis tool: Even if you don't trade EUR/GBP, watching it helps you tell whether a move in EUR/USD or GBP/USD comes from dollar weakness or from the strength of the euro or pound itself.

Risk management tips for trading EUR/GBP

  • Don't mistake calm for safety: Low volatility tempts some traders into higher leverage; but a political shock can produce several times the usual volatility in a single day.
  • Costs: In a low-volatility symbol, spread and swap take a bigger share of potential profit.
  • The right broker: Spreads on crosses vary a lot between brokers; make the comparison in forex broker reviews .
