The Dow Jones is one of the major US indices, known worldwide and closely watched in the financial markets. Understanding and analyzing the Dow Jones properly is the first step toward following its price and trading it.

What Is the Dow Jones Index and Which Companies Are in It?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, abbreviated DJIA, tracks the stock performance of 30 large US companies. Also known simply as «the Dow», the index has been running since 1896 and is one of the oldest benchmarks of the US stock market. Note that, despite what the word «Industrial» suggests, the members of the «Dow Jones Industrial Average» are not only industrial companies. Technology companies, banks, retail chains, consumer goods makers and healthcare companies are all part of the Dow. The current members of the Dow Jones are listed in the table below:

This table is not fixed, and the Dow Jones composition may change over time. For example, Alphabet replaced Verizon in 2026.

To understand it better, the Dow Jones is a price-weighted index (Price-Weighted Index). This means each stock's price determines its weight in the index. So a company with a higher share price can have a bigger impact on the index for the same percentage change, even if its market value is lower than another company's. The largest company by market value therefore does not necessarily have the biggest influence on the Dow.

What Is the Dow Jones Symbol in Forex?

The Dow Jones symbol in forex usually refers to trading a Dow Jones CFD; that is, without owning shares of the 30 Dow member companies, you make a profit or loss from price changes by trading the Dow. One point some beginner traders may get wrong is that the Dow Jones index itself is not a currency pair; rather, forex brokers offer contracts based on stock indices alongside currencies.

Before trading, we suggest checking not only the symbol name but also the contract size, the value of each price point, the minimum volume, the swap (holding) cost and the trading hours. One lot of the Dow Jones does not necessarily have the same value at two different brokers.

Dow Jones Symbol in MetaTrader 4 and 5

With any broker whose trading platform is MetaTrader, you trade its Dow Jones symbol in MetaTrader 4 and 5. To find the symbol in the desktop version:

1. Open the Market Watch window.

2. Right-click on the symbol list and go to Symbols.

3. Check the index group, such as Indices.

4. Find the name listed on the broker's website, such as US30 or YM, and enable it to be shown.

5. Right-click the symbol and open the chart with Chart Window.

The contract details are also available under the Specification option. This section is useful for checking the contract size and trading conditions.

To enable the Dow Jones symbol in MetaTrader 5 on Android, go to the Quotes section, tap the + sign and search for the symbol name. If the symbol isn't found, check whether the broker offers it on the account type and server you selected. Installing MetaTrader does not by itself mean access to all symbols.

Some brokers also offer their trading services on the TradingView platform. To view the Dow Jones index on TradingView, you can type DJ in the search box. The DJ:DJI symbol shows the Dow Jones index. If your goal is to look at futures trading, you need to open the futures contract chart.

What factors affect the price of the Dow Jones index?

The Dow Jones figure is derived from the share prices of its members. So any factor that affects the shares of member companies can affect the Dow Jones index. Influential factors include the following:

  • Company financial reports: Revenue, profit, profit margin and management's outlook on the business affect share prices.
  • Federal Reserve decisions: Changes in interest rates and the central bank's messages about their future path affect financing costs and stock valuations.
  • US economic data: Inflation, employment and consumption data can change the market's view of economic growth and monetary policy.
  • Political and trade developments: War, tariffs, export restrictions and supply chain disruptions affect companies' costs and sales.
  • Exchange rates and commodity prices: A change in the value of the dollar or in energy prices can be positive for some index members and negative for others.

In analyzing the Dow Jones, the gap between the news and market expectations matters a lot. Good economic data doesn't always make the index rise; if that same data raises the likelihood of an interest rate hike, the market reaction may be negative.

What time does the Dow Jones market open?

When we talk about the Dow Jones market opening, we usually mean the start of stock trading in the US market, which is active Monday to Friday from 9:30 to 16:00 New York time, except on public holidays or days when the market closes early. The equivalent hours in Iran time are as follows:

What is the difference between the Dow Jones and the Nasdaq index?

«Nasdaq» may refer to the Nasdaq Composite or the Nasdaq 100 index. The Nasdaq 100 can include both US and international companies and differs from the Nasdaq Composite, which tracks a much broader set of stocks. In index trading with forex brokers, symbols such as NAS100 or US100 usually mean the Nasdaq 100, which is made up of 100 large US and international companies. The table below shows the differences between the Dow Jones and the Nasdaq index:

Criterion

Dow Jones

Nasdaq 100

Companies covered

30 companies

100 companies

Weighting method

Based on share price

Based on modified market capitalization

Sector mix

A range of industries, from financial services to technology and healthcare

Greater focus on technology and growth companies

Well-known index symbol

DJIA or DJI

NDX

Differences in composition and weighting mean the Nasdaq and the Dow Jones don't always move by the same amount. For example, a broad drop in tech stocks may put more pressure on the Nasdaq 100, since most Nasdaq 100 companies operate in technology. Meanwhile, the performance of the financial or industrial companies in the Dow Jones can offset part of the Dow Jones decline.
