The complete guide to Cardano

Teagle editorial team· updated October 22, 2026 · reading time 5 min

The Cardano price (ADA) is one of the longest-followed prices among Iranian crypto market participants; Cardano is a blockchain known for its research-driven approach and step-by-step development, and its simple staking has appealed to many holders. On this page you can see the live ADA price against Tether and its candlestick chart, and below you will learn about Cardano's founders and history, its technology and ADA's capped supply, the factors that affect the price, transfer tips and access conditions for Iranian users.

What is Cardano?

Cardano is a layer-1 blockchain and a platform for smart contracts and decentralized applications, and ADA is its native currency. The name ADA comes from Ada Lovelace, the 19th-century mathematician regarded as one of the first programmers in history, and its smallest unit is called the "lovelace"; each ADA is one million lovelace.

Cardano's founder is Charles Hoskinson, who was previously one of the co-founders of Ethereum and launched Cardano after leaving that project. Cardano's mainnet launched in September 2017. Cardano's development and support are split among three entities:

  • Input Output (IOHK): An engineering and research company that has handled a large part of the technical development.
  • Cardano Foundation: A Switzerland-based entity focused on standardization, community support and promoting the network.
  • Emurgo: A company that works on business development and investment in ecosystem projects.

Research-driven approach and development stages

Cardano's distinguishing feature is that many parts of its protocol were published and peer-reviewed as academic papers before implementation, and its code is written in the Haskell programming language, which is known for making program correctness provable. Supporters see this approach as the reason for Cardano's security and precision, while critics see it as the cause of slow development.

Cardano's roadmap is defined in several "eras":

EraMain focus
ByronNetwork launch and ability to transfer ADA
ShelleyDecentralization and staking with community pools (2020)
GoguenSmart contracts and native tokens; smart contracts since September 2021 with the "Alonzo" upgrade
BashoScalability and efficiency improvements
VoltaireCommunity-driven governance and treasury

Cardano uses the "extended UTXO" (eUTXO) model, which is inspired by Bitcoin's structure and extended for smart contracts; this model differs from Ethereum's account-based model, which is why developing decentralized applications on Cardano has its own logic.

Ouroboros and ADA staking

Cardano runs on a proof-of-stake protocol called Ouroboros. ADA holders can delegate their holdings to a "stake pool" and receive a share of network rewards. An important feature of Cardano staking is that ADA is not locked and stays in your own wallet; you can move it whenever you want. Rewards are calculated and paid in multi-day periods called "epochs".

ADA supply

ADA's supply cap is 45 billion units. A large part of this amount entered circulation at launch, and the rest is held in the protocol's "reserve", which is gradually distributed as staking rewards along with transaction fees. Part of this flow also goes to the network's "treasury", which is used to fund projects by community vote. Because the rate of withdrawal from the reserve gradually declines, the rate at which new ADA enters circulation also decreases over time.

What factors change the Cardano price?

1. Technical progress and upgrades

Major network upgrades, such as the launch of smart contracts or governance changes, usually draw market attention for a while. On the other hand, delays in executing the roadmap or low real activity on the network are recurring criticisms of Cardano.

2. Ecosystem activity

Usage of decentralized applications, total value locked in DeFi and the number of active network users are the metrics the market looks at to measure Cardano against rivals such as Ethereum and Solana .

3. Overall market trend and macro conditions

Like other altcoins, from XRP to Dogecoin, ADA is sensitive to the direction of Bitcoin and global liquidity. Follow interest rate decisions and key US data in the economic calendar and current rates on the interest rates page.

4. Governance and the network treasury

With Cardano entering the Voltaire era, ADA holders have gained a formal role in decisions on protocol changes and how the network treasury is spent. Voting results and the budgets allocated to projects are part of the news that participants in this market follow.

ADA transfers and wallet tips

  • Common Cardano addresses start with "addr1". Older Byron-era addresses had a different format and are still valid, but staking requires newer wallets.
  • Cardano network fees are low and depend on the transaction's data size, not the amount sent. The exchange's withdrawal fee is set separately.
  • Every transaction output on Cardano must carry a minimum amount of ADA; that is why sending Cardano native tokens always carries some ADA along with it.
  • The withdrawal and deposit networks must match; some exchanges also offer ADA as a token on other networks.

Keep your Cardano wallet recovery phrase (usually 15 or 24 words) offline and out of others' reach. You never need to send ADA to anyone in order to stake; any message asking you to send ADA to "activate rewards" cannot be trusted. Cardano for Iranian users

ADA trades against the Toman and Tether on most Iranian exchanges, and its Toman price is roughly the dollar price of ADA multiplied by the Toman rate of Tether. One advantage of Cardano for Iranian users is that staking is done directly from a personal wallet and does not require an account at a foreign exchange, whereas foreign exchanges usually bar residents of Iran under sanctions rules and accounts identified as Iranian may be blocked. That said, some wallet providers may also restrict access from Iran.
