The complete guide to Dogecoin

Teagle editorial team· updated October 22, 2026 · reading time 5 min

Dogecoin's price (DOGE) is a textbook example of a cryptocurrency whose price is driven more by internet culture and social media hype than by technology. Dogecoin was created as a joke, yet for years it has ranked among the world's largest cryptocurrencies. On this page you can see the live DOGE to Tether price and its candlestick chart, and below you will learn about how Dogecoin was created, its technology and unlimited supply, the factors that move its price, transfer tips, and the risks Iranian users should know about.

How was Dogecoin born?

Dogecoin was created in December 2013 by two programmers, Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer. Their goal was to poke fun at the wave of new cryptocurrencies being launched one after another at the time. The project's logo and name came from the famous "Doge" meme: a picture of a Shiba Inu dog that was hugely popular on the internet back then.

Contrary to its creators' expectations, Dogecoin's user community grew quickly. In its early years, the community became known for charity and support campaigns, including raising money for the Jamaican bobsled team's trip to the 2014 Winter Olympics. Both founders later stepped away from the project, and software development was handed over to community volunteers. Later, cryptocurrencies inspired by the same meme, such as Shiba Inu (SHIB), were also launched; these are separate projects and should not be confused with Dogecoin.

Dogecoin from a technical perspective

Dogecoin's code is derived from Litecoin, and like Litecoin it uses the Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm. Since 2014, merged mining with Litecoin has been active, meaning Litecoin miners can mine Dogecoin at the same time without using extra energy. This ties the security of the Dogecoin network to the computing power of the larger Litecoin network.

Dogecoin has no complex smart contracts and is mostly used for payments and simple value transfers. Each block takes about one minute to produce, which means transactions are confirmed faster than on Bitcoin.

Dogecoin's unlimited supply

The most important economic difference between Dogecoin and Bitcoin is that it has no supply cap. The reward for each block has been fixed at 10,000 DOGE since 2015, so about 5 billion new DOGE are added to the supply every year. Because this number is fixed while the total supply grows each year, Dogecoin's inflation rate declines over time in percentage terms.

Supporters say this design makes Dogecoin better suited to spending than saving and keeps miners' incentives stable. Critics, on the other hand, argue that the constant new supply creates permanent selling pressure and that growing demand is needed to sustain the price.

What moves the price of Dogecoin?

1. Social media and celebrities

Dogecoin is exceptionally sensitive to comments from celebrities on social media. Elon Musk's posts and statements about Dogecoin have repeatedly triggered sharp price spikes or drops within a short time. Even a US government body sharing the DOGE acronym in recent years increased media attention on this cryptocurrency. Moves like these often reverse as quickly as they come.

2. Overall market sentiment

Dogecoin usually makes its biggest moves when the crypto market is hot and retail investors are pouring in, and in downturns it usually suffers steeper drops than larger cryptocurrencies such as BNB . Unlike projects such as Cardano that rely on a technical roadmap and research-driven development, Dogecoin's price is shaped more by its community's mood and market hype.

3. Adoption as a payment method

Announcements that stores and companies accept Dogecoin can draw market attention, although the actual payment volume is usually smaller than the media buzz suggests.

4. Macroeconomic conditions

Global liquidity and US interest rates affect risky assets, including Dogecoin; check the timing of key events in the economic calendar and current central bank rates on the interest rates page. When cheap money dries up worldwide, assets like Dogecoin, which have no income backing and whose value depends largely on retail investor demand, are usually hit sooner and harder than others.

Dogecoin transfers and fees

  • Dogecoin mainnet addresses usually start with the letter "D".
  • Dogecoin network fees are usually low, but exchanges have their own fees and minimum withdrawals, which matter for small amounts.
  • Some exchanges also offer a token version of Dogecoin on networks such as BEP20. If the withdrawal network does not match the destination deposit network, the funds may be lost.
  • Thanks to the one-minute block time, deposit confirmation on exchanges is usually faster than for Bitcoin, although each exchange sets its own required number of confirmations.

Security and common risks

Dogecoin's fame and its association with celebrities have made it one of the most popular subjects for online scams. Fake live-stream videos that use celebrities' names to promise to "double the DOGE you send" have been circulating for years. No reputable person or company will send your crypto back doubled. Follow warnings about high-risk platforms in the Risk Warnings section of Teagle, and never share your wallet recovery phrase with anyone.

Dogecoin's extreme volatility makes leveraged trading in it very risky; if you do make such trades, work out your position size and stop-loss before entering with the trading calculator .

Dogecoin for Iranian users

On most Iranian exchanges, Dogecoin is traded against the Toman and Tether , and its Toman price is roughly the dollar price of DOGE multiplied by the Toman rate of Tether; so for Iranian users two layers of volatility stack up: Dogecoin's own volatility in the global market and the volatility of the open-market dollar and Tether in Iran. Because of its low unit price, Dogecoin looks attractive to newcomers, but a cheap unit does not mean the asset itself is cheap or low-risk; what matters is the total market value and the level of volatility. Foreign exchanges usually bar residents of Iran under sanctions rules, and accounts identified as Iranian may be restricted or frozen, with funds locked for some time. Domestic exchanges also differ in fees, liquidity and security; see the crypto exchange comparison on Teagle, and track the prices of other cryptocurrencies in the crypto section .
