The complete guide to Solana

Teagle editorial team· updated October 22, 2026 · reading time 5 min

The Solana price (SOL) has become one of the main gauges of altcoin market sentiment in recent years; Solana is a blockchain known for high speed and very low fees, and it hosts a large share of token and meme coin trading. On this page you can see the live SOL/USDT price and its candlestick chart, and further down you will learn about Solana's technology, its supply and inflation mechanism, the factors that affect its price, transfer and security tips, and access conditions for Iranian users.

What is Solana and who created it?

Solana is a layer-1 blockchain for running smart contracts and decentralized applications, and SOL is its native currency. Its core idea was proposed in a 2017 white paper by Anatoly Yakovenko, a software engineer who had previously worked at Qualcomm. Solana Labs was formed to develop it, and later the Solana Foundation was established in Switzerland to support the ecosystem. The mainnet beta launched in March 2020.

From the start, Solana aimed to solve a problem that networks like Ethereum faced during busy periods: limited capacity and high fees. Solana tried to run everything on a single fast chain without offloading transactions to a layer 2.

Solana's technology: Proof of History and Proof of Stake

Solana's best-known innovation is Proof of History, a kind of cryptographic clock that establishes the chronological order of events before consensus is reached. This clock works alongside a Proof of Stake mechanism; validators stake SOL to take part in producing and confirming blocks, and ordinary users can also delegate their SOL to them and receive a share of the rewards.

The result of this design is block times of under one second and fees that are usually a fraction of a cent. The price of this speed is more expensive hardware for running a validator, which critics link to weaker decentralization. In 2021 and 2022, the Solana network suffered several complete halts in block production and needed validators to coordinate to restart it; network stability has been one of the developers' priorities ever since.

SOL supply: declining inflation and fee burning

Solana has no fixed supply cap. New SOL is minted as staking rewards, and its inflation rate was scheduled to start at around 8 percent and decrease by 15 percent each year until it reaches about 1.5 percent in the long run. On the other side, part of the base transaction fee is burned. Those who do not stake their SOL effectively see their share of the total supply shrink over time; this is one reason staking is popular on this network.

What factors move the Solana price?

1. Network activity

Trading volume on decentralized exchanges, the number of active users and waves of meme coin creation and trading on Solana change the demand for SOL. This activity can rise or fall quickly, which is why SOL is usually more volatile than larger cryptocurrencies.

2. Stability and ecosystem events

Network outages or problems at major projects in the ecosystem have a direct impact on the price. A well-known example was the bankruptcy of the FTX exchange in November 2022; the exchange and its affiliated companies were major backers of Solana, and their collapse put heavy pressure on SOL.

3. Overall market trend and macro conditions

The direction of Bitcoin, global liquidity and US interest rates affect all altcoins, including Solana. Check the timing of data releases and central bank meetings in the economic calendar and current rates on the interest rates page.

4. Competition among blockchains

Solana competes for users, developers and liquidity with Ethereum and its layer 2s, as well as other blockchains such as Cardano and Toncoin , and any shift in this competition is reflected in the SOL price too.

Transferring SOL and Solana tokens

Solana addresses are strings of letters and numbers and do not start with a specific prefix. A few points beginners often overlook:

  • Network fees are very low, but exchange withdrawal fees are set separately and may be higher than the actual network fee.
  • Minimum account balance: Every account on Solana needs a small amount of SOL as a rent-exempt balance to stay on the network; this is why wallets do not always let you send your very last bit of SOL.
  • SPL tokens: To receive any token on Solana, including the Tether Solana version, a "token account" is created, which costs a small amount of SOL. So always keep some SOL in your wallet for moving tokens.
  • The withdrawal and deposit networks must match; some exchanges also offer SOL as a token on other networks.

Security in the Solana ecosystem

Solana's speed and low cost have made it a busy venue for launching new tokens; many of these tokens are short-lived and their value drops to almost zero within a short time. Before interacting with any unknown app, read the transaction your wallet shows you for signing carefully, do not open unknown tokens and NFTs sent to your wallet, and never enter your recovery phrase on any website. Using a separate wallet with a small balance to test new projects reduces the risk to your main wallet. Also follow warnings about high-risk platforms and schemes in Teagle's risk warnings section; promises of guaranteed profit on SOL or "staking with multiplied returns" are a serious red flag.

Solana for Iranian users

SOL is traded against Toman and Tether on most Iranian exchanges, and its Toman price is roughly the dollar price of SOL multiplied by the Toman rate of Tether; so changes in the open-market dollar rate affect it too. Foreign exchanges usually prohibit serving residents of Iran due to sanctions rules, and accounts identified as Iranian may be restricted or blocked. Domestic exchanges also differ in fees, support for the Solana network for withdrawals, and security; before choosing, see the crypto exchange comparison on Teagle and follow prices of other cryptocurrencies in the crypto section .
