Formula
- True range = the largest of (high − low), |high − previous close|, |low − previous close|
- ATR = smoothed average of the true range over 14 candles (Wilder's method)
Default settings
Period 14; stop loss 1.5 to 3 times ATR
Settings by trading style
| Style | Setting | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Scalping | ATR 7 to 10, multiplier 1 to 1.5 | Tight stop loss |
| Daily | ATR 14, multiplier 1.5 to 2 | Balanced distance |
| Swing | ATR 14 to 21, multiplier 2 to 3 | More breathing room |
Main signals
- ATR gives no buy or sell signal
- Stop-loss distance = multiplier × ATR from the entry price
- Trade size = dollar risk ÷ stop-loss distance
- High ATR = bigger moves, smaller size
Common mistakes
- Reading market direction from ATR
- The same fixed stop loss on every symbol in every condition
- Comparing the ATR values of two symbols without converting them to a percentage of price
