Settings by trading style
| Style | Setting | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Scalping | 10 to 14 with a multiplier of 1.5 to 2 | Sensitive to short-term volatility |
| Daily | 20 with a multiplier of 2 | John Bollinger's standard setting |
| Swing | 20 to 50 with a multiplier of 2 to 2.5 | Wider bands, fewer signals |
Main signals
- Price moving back inside the band from below or above
- Squeeze: narrow bands, usually before a big move
- Price hugging the upper band in a strong uptrend
- Crossing the middle band to confirm direction
Common mistakes
- Selling just because the upper band was touched; a touch alone is not a signal
- Predicting direction from a squeeze; a squeeze only says a move is near
- Using them without regard to the overall trend
